This is a very famous quote by William Paige. The writer is discussing here regarding three things which cannot be taken back once they are spent, and wants us to be alert while dealing with these aspects in our life. Let us understand them one by one :-
The first one is an arrow. We are aware that an arrow can be used for good as well as bad purposes. We can use it positively for getting some fruits from a distant tree or for shying away wild animals from our farm. It can also be used to hurt human beings or domestic animals. It is important to understand that once the arrow is spent it cannot be taken back. Hence proper judgement should be taken before using the arrow.
The second one is a lost opportunity. It is very important that we learn to recognize the opportunity and grab it as quickly as possible. If we fail to grab the opportunity timely it is lost and we are left repenting. For example there are various opportunities in front of students for choosing their career path. They can decide to become a doctor, engineer, opt for civil services as career choice and become collector, commissioner, superintendent of police etc. But if this opportunity is not en cashed then time will be lost. Many people regret that they didn't took the appropriate decision when they had time.
The third one is spoken word. We are human beings and we communicate through languages that are made up of words. Words have power to make or break a person. You can see that you like the persons who encourage and motivate you through their words, but you hate the people who use stern language for you. It is also said that wound made by weapon heal after some time but wounds given by words do not heal.
The author of this quote wants us to be balanced in our approach. He wants us to live the life without regret. Hence he wishes to caution us regarding nature of these three things Arrow, Opportunity and Spoken word. Always be careful in life not to hurt anyone and be alert to grab the opportunity for our progress.
