I recently visited Heinz & Mitchell Private boarding school, which was situated in a remote village in Bihar, India. I went there with my father to get my admission in that school.
The school was so remote that the nearest village was twelve kilometres away from the school main gates. The road that lead to the school was surrounded by huge trees on either sides. The school had really big gates with some sculptures of mythological animals on top of them, I identified some of them to be centaurs, griffins and basilisks. The school gates were guarded by two security guards. Vehicles were not allowed inside the school grounds so we had to walk from there. There was a pathway leading from there, the first hundred metres of the school grounds consisted of rare trees and plants, and the pathway had flowering plants on either sides, most of them I had never seen but they all smelled pleasant. The pathway lead to the main school building, just near it was the schoolground, where I saw all the students exercising. After that I went with my father to meet the school principal to talk about my admission. The principal was a friendly person and on asking as to why the students were exercising. He answered that the school was built by two famous German psychologists namely Heinz and Mitchell and that in the studies that they conducted they found out that exercising thirty minutes before studying could boost memory and cognitive functions. The school's teaching methods were really unconventional. The school did not make the children take "useless" tests every year, in fact the school had only one exam and that was the graduation exam. The school never gave any work for the students to do in the boarding house, the students did not even have assignments or projects. Once every two or three months the school took all their students to far away suburbs and villages to help the needy. According to the principal it was done to teach the students the importance and the need of morality in their life. I talked to a few students there, they were all cheerful and they loved their school and the unconventional methods of teaching followed there, all of them loved the unconventional methods because they didn't have to have blindly remember everything taught there for the tests and they could also choose the subjects that they want and love instead of going in a fixed time table made by someone else. Some of them studied in other schools before going there and according to them, this school let them have their mental peace and now they are more happy in their lives.
These 'unconventional' methods of teaching that I saw there left a huge space for sympathy in my heart for the students of other schools who are mostly suffering from having to blindly study everything in their books just to write it on a paper and get 'marks'. It also made me realise that most schools are more or less capitalistic in nature and they do not care for the well being of their students.
