Inference made from observing hens sitting on their eggs:

Hens once they lay their eggs they have to hatch the egg. The process of hatching means providing a suitable temperature for the growth of the chick embryo.

As soon as it lays the egg, it sits on the egg to provide the suitable temperature. In lab, the same condition is given in the incubator at 21℃. The hen sits on the eggs for 21 continuous day after which the new chick hatches out of it.
