Dear Diary, 12th of June 2017

Today I was visiting my friend my neighbors, uncle Patel to ask him for some help in my home work. He is a qualified Accountant and He always helps me with my work. He was very nice and humble.
However, today, I couldn't help but notice how when I was studying with uncle Patel, the room was being cleaned by a very young girl, probably 9 years old.

I was very surprised, cause girls this young are usually spending time watching cartoons or with friends and she was cleaning uncle Patel's room. She did not look happy, her face did not show any innocence of what a 9 year should look like. Her manners were very mature and so was her speech.

I asked uncle Patel about her and he told me they have hired the daughter of their maid, she the work is getting too much for her and they will pay her Rs.500/month which is an exorbitant amount.

I did not want to say anything to uncle Patel, cause it does't look nice but I was seriously concerned. Just Rs.500/- month and she is giving up her whole childhood for this.. I couldn't help but picture myself or my sister at that age and how it would have an impact on our lives.

I left uncle Patel's house that day, extremely sad. I got my homework done but I did not feel that good ... I wish I could have done something for her

Dear Diary,

Today, while going to the school, I saw a girl in untidy clothes., My mother told me that she was the daughter of the maid. I was moved to see her. The sweet, innocent face of the girl kept on haunting me the whole day. I came back home and was desperate to talk to her.

I talked to her and tried to convince her about the importance of going to school and about the ban on child labor. I told her that education is the way to come out from ignorance and suppression. I tried to make her understand the importance of education in one’s life and the benefits of being educated. She told me about her poverty and helplessness. She told me that she also wanted to go to school, but her parents did not allow her. I told her that I would talk to her parents and try to convince them.

The girl was happy to hear that and promised that she would definitely go to school if her parents would allow her.
