The poem explains that there is a difference between living and existing.  Life becomes meaningful when we accept new friends, new challenges and chase new dreams  When we lose our self esteem, get afraid before taking risks, keep doing the same thing again and again, we have started dying slowly.  When you do not make new goals and look into the uncertain future, these are the signs of a slow death.
