You start with an equimolar mixture of the gases SO₂ and O₂ in a container. The SO₂ and O₂ react to completion to form SO₃. If the temperature after the reaction is 25°C and the pressure in the container is 1.55 atm, what is the density of the product gas mixture? Assume ideal behavior.

Explanation:

Th equation is given :

2SO₂ + O₂ ---> 2SO₃

In the container it is given that it has equimolar mixture of gases SO₂ and O₂ are present and they react to form sulphur trioxide .According to the balanced chemical equation, 2 moles of SO₂ reacts with one mole of O₂. Therefore , SO₂ is the limiting reagent.

Convert the given temperature that is 25  degree Celsius to kelvin

T (K) = (25 + 273) K = 298 K

using ideal gas equation that is :

PV=nRT

1.55 x V=n x 0.0821 x 298

or,

V= n x 0.0821 x 298 /1.55

V= 15.78 n L
