You've decided you want a plant for your room. At the gardening store, there are 4 different kinds of plants (tulip, fern, cactus, and ficus) and 4 different kinds of pots to hold the plants (clay pot, plastic pot, metal pot, and wood pot).
If you randomly pick the plant and the pot, what is the probability that you won't get a clay pot or a cactus?

Given :    At the gardening store, there are 4 different kinds of plants (tulip, fern, cactus, and ficus) and 4 different kinds of pots to hold the plants (clay pot, plastic pot, metal pot, and wood pot).

To find : probability that you won't get a clay pot or a cactus

Solution:

Different kind of Plants A = { Tulip  , Fern  , Cactus , Ficus}

n(A) = 4

Pots B = { Clay , Plastic , Metal , wood }

n(B) = 4

n(S) = 4 * 4 = 16

S = {  (Tulip Clay) , (Tulip Plastic)  , (Tulip Metal) , (Tulip Wood) ,

 (Fern Clay) , (Fern Plastic)  , (Fern Metal) , (Fern Wood) ,

(Cactus Clay) , (Cactus Plastic)  , (Cactus Metal) , (Cactus Wood) ,

(Ficus Clay) , (Ficus Plastic)  , (Ficus Metal) , (Ficus Wood) }

you won't get a clay pot or a cactus =

{ (Tulip Plastic)  , (Tulip Metal) , (Tulip Wood) ,  (Fern Plastic)  , (Fern Metal) , (Fern Wood) , (Ficus Plastic)  , (Ficus Metal) , (Ficus Wood) } }

= 9

Probability =   9/16

probability that you won't get a clay pot or a cactus = 9/16
