Neglected and forgotten for years, after the mushrooming of shopping malls and multiplexes in the city, Ludhiana’s Nehru Rose Garden came alive once again on Saturday as the Municipal Corporation is organising a flower show here. The two-day flower show also includes garden competitions, best park competitions, baby show and flower competitions for government departments, institutes, colleges, schools and amateurs apart from on the spot painting competitions.

Callousness from the MC coupled with the disinterest of city residents, the flower show was discontinued and had not been held in 2013. Following instructions from MC commissioner G K Singh, however, the show was continued this year.

Saturday’s standout participant was policeman Suresh Kumar, who came with 21 entries in category-N (three pots of foilage, cacti or succulent plants) and bagged both the first and second prizes. Kumar, a reader attached with the DIG Ludhiana, said his duty never came in the way of his passion for bonsai gardening and added that he has more than 100 bonsai plants of different species at his residence in Raman Enclave.

“Bonsai is always grown in shallow pots. Bonsai needs special attention and care and on daily basis I spend two hours maintaining my plants. They are more than a family to me and I take care of them like my children. Even my wife and children are so attached to them now,” Kumar said, adding that it was difficult for him to choose which of his plants he should bring for the competition.

Surinder Kumar, executive engineer, horticulture branch MC said that show got a tremendous response with 768 entries in total including 103 which came for on the spot painting contest. “Exams are going on so less participation from school students was expected but still the response was huge. On Sunday, baby show will be there and doctors have been called in to judge entries on basis of height and weight as per age of babies. Parents can register their children. Children up to five years of age are welcome to participate,”Surinder said.

Talking to Newsline, some of visitors said that change was visible at Rose Garden which appeared cleaner than before and was well maintained. “Rose Garden was well maintained and we visited after a long time but had MC advertised show in better way, more entries should have come,” said Sumit Bhandari, a resident.

G K Singh, MC commissioner, said, “It was a good beginning but we will try our best to organise the show in a better way next year. However, the show will not be discontinued and it will be held every year from now
