Explanation:

Average velocity = displacement / time

  • Displacement is the distance between initial and final point .
  • be careful it is  displacement not the distance .

as you walk back from the school right back to the home from where you begin your initial and final points become same so your  displacement becomes ZERO ,

although you covered the distance but eventually you returned back to the same point .

To understand easily , its like you moved some positive  and than some negative which adds up to zero displacement
