d = distance traveled in a month = 1000 miles

n = number of months in a year = 12

D = total distance traveled in a year

total distance traveled in a year is given as

D = n d

D = 12 x 1000

D = 12000 miles

d' = distance after which oil change is required = 4000 miles

N = number of oil changes in an year

number of oil changes in a year is given as

N = D/d'

N = 12000/4000

N = 3
