Solution:

Weight of the parcel = 200 grams

Postal rate for 50 grams or less = Rs 5

Postal rate each additional 50 grams = Rs 3

[We can divide these 200 grams into sections by dividing it by 5.]

200/5 = 4 sections

                        METHOD - 1

→ Taking the first 50 grams = Rs 5

→ Rate for the second 50 grams = Rs 3

→ Rate for the third section = Rs 3

→ Rate for the fourth section = Rs 3

Adding these amounts,

5 + 3 + 3 + 3

= Rs 14

∴ I have to pay a total sum of 14 rupees to send the parcel.

                   METHOD - 2

Cost for the first 50 grams = Rs 5

No. of sections left = 4 - 1 = 3

Cost for each additional 50 grams = Rs 3

Therefore, total amount to be paid = 5 + (3 x 3)

= 5 + 9

= Rs 14
