Monday, 25th November, 10 p.m
Dear Diary,
You must be wondering why I haven’t updated you for the last three days.
I had been stranded in Peddipalem.
Peddipalem is a small village in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
I had gone there with my class mates and Science teacher to visit a friend and collect some samples for our biology project from his village.
We were hit by a severe cyclone that existed for three long days.
There was a raging storm accompanied by heavy rain and speed breaking winds.
I have never seen Nature turning so savage.
The waves were tumultuous. They were crashing on the shore with thundering noise and energy.
We had sought refuge in a Government School. Many of the villagers had also sought shelter there.
It was then that I realized how bad their condition was. The main income of the villagers is through fishing. When there are no fishes food becomes scarce.
Potable water is obtained from a far off well. There is no provision of running water.
In these three days I realized how lucky I am and how unfortunate they were.
The children were howling. The elderly were ailing.
When we were finally able to escape from the place after three days all of us have made a promise to those poor villagers.
We would save our pocket money and our birthday gifts and contribute them to the welfare of the village.
I have never felt so sad and selfish before. These three days have opened my eyes to the misery and suffering of others.
