In an initiative to provide immediate material and trauma relief to the flood victims in the nearby village, I was one of the six fortunate cadets from my school to be selected.
It was heartening to see mass devastation. Poor villagers had lost their families and were only hoping for some miracle to get united once again. Material things were not a concern even to the poorest.
Rain was still pouring heavily and 1500 villagers were stranded.
We decided not to waste any time and jumped in water with life jackets. We were just pulling anyone who came our way and helped them reach the camp.
Soon boats were arranged for, and we were getting kids, old people and women first in them.
We also managed to save a few terrified goats from the top of a floating tree.
Out of the 1000 relief teams, some took up the task of repairing the canal embankment so that flowing water could be controlled.
Army personnel were distributing clothes and food packets.
