A day never to be forgotten
The School year had come to an end. It was the last day in Class Nine. One more year for the Boards, the last year in School. Contemplating I cycled to school to receive the Annual result.
Being a rank holder I was confident of my performance. I was excited to know about my marks, how high I had scored, my top rank was a permanent status.
When the names of the toppers were announced in the School Assembly I was however shell shocked. No where was my name.
When my report card was handed I could not believe it was mine. I had scored extremely poor marks. When I enquired of my poor marks my teachers lamented that my answers lacked the weight of a pre- board examinee.
I was extremely depressed. I did not want to stay in school a minute longer. My friends and I had planned a small get together to celebrate our last day in class nine but now I wanted to escape and go home.
I was trying to slip out of the school unnoticed when the office peon called me. He said the Principal wanted to meet me.
Ashamed at the thought of being scolded in front of all the teachers, my eyes filled with tears. As I entered the Principal's room it was bustling with teachers. The Principal summoned me and handed me a letter.
My heart skipped a beat, was she terminating me for my poor performance, I wondered. As I stumbled along I took the letter. I could feel all the eyes in the room looking at me. But lo and presto! It was not termination but jubilation! The International Olympiad Board for Mathematics had selected me as the student to represent India.
My joys knew no end. My Mathematics teacher hugged me. By then sweets were being distributed as it was a great honour for the school as well.
This unexpected piece of luck suddenly changed my mood. Life again regained its vibrant hues. I was overjoyed. What a memorable moment it was !
