Heat the mixture using a Bunsen burner until the mixture begins to give an orange glow with emission of heat. Remove the china dish from the burner. Iron and sulphur have reacted to form a black substance called iron sulphide (FeS). You will not see the particles of iron and sulphur separately. Now, bring a magnet near the china dish. The magnet does not attract the compound. The constituent elements, iron and sulphur, of the new compound have lost their individual properties.
