Transactions are replicated to 3 nodes within the primary region selected for creating the storage account. This replication is done synchronously.

The transaction is also lined up for asynchronous replication to another secondary region.  

This is done to make data durable by replicating it to 3 more storage nodes there.  

Geo Redundant Storage (GRS)  is enabled when storage account is created.

The reason it copies the data is to protect it from an unfavorable event like network failure, power failure hardware failure, natural disaster etc. all these events may lead to loss of information but, with the replication of data , it is protected.
