Explanation:

First, ask for a serious talk, explain to him the importance of education for the future life. Explain to him that his only way (considering your family is not extremely rich) to live with confort is to work hard in the early life, starting from now. Tell him that a good job need good studies and it can be acquired only through an elitist selection.

Those big words aren't gonna make much impression on him, he's probably too young, but he will understand those words when time comes.

Then, try to find out what are his interests, explain to him how the physics work, how human body works, how the earth works etc... And eventually he'll developp an interest in one of those subjects, then try to push him into an eager of knowledge. It will become, by itself, a motor of studying and working, and not for requirement, but for interest. Never forget that most of the students which excell in a subject actually like this subject.

Then, if it still doesn't work, you can still make him studying by the simple "reward" process. Promise a present if he achieves good grades, and keep on doing so until he -hopefully one day- finds out that he is actually studying for himself, or that the pleasure in learning and working is way greater than the brieve pleasure of -rewards-
