I suspect that one can lend something that is in possession whether one own it or not.
Person lent his bike to a friend provided any possessive person refers to same person that subject person.
He had possession of it so he could give it to his friend.
Though he lent a bike to his friend that means he lent a bike of which he is an owner but actually dosen't own it.
