Friend is shy fearing that his friends would make fun of him so he is unable to give his best and get left out often.Other reason for this could be lack of self-confidence which prevents him performing well.The situation can be solved by forcing him to particpate in group activities and allowing him to ask and anseer any of the question asked in group diacuaaion.

the best possible solution to that is making your friend feel comfortable and knowing that all of you are there for him and he can trust you all.. try involving him more in your daily activities and conversations .. sometimes talk about him and make him participate too...
