Your friend leaves home from your place, and forgets his keys onto your sofa. You go to the balcony and throw the keys to your friend, who stands on the street waiting for the keys. The keys leave your hand 6.0 m above your friend's hand, and the keys start flying at 8.0 m/s, 30° above the horizontal. How far from your hand should your friend be standing, in order to get the flying keys into his hand?

Given : The keys leave your hand 6.0 m above your friend's hand, and the keys start flying at 8.0 m/s, 30° above the horizontal.

To Find : How far from your hand should your friend be standing, in order to get the flying keys into his hand?

Solution:

keys start flying at 8.0 m/s, 30° above the horizontal.

Vertical Velocity = 8 Sin 30°  = 8 (1/2) = 4 m/s

Horizontal Velocity = 8 cos 30° = 4√3  m/s

Vertical Height  = 6 m

Using

S = ut + (1/2)at²

S = -6   ( as initial velocity upward is taken + ve)  so distance below will be -ve

u = 4

a = -g =  - 10

-6 = 4t - 5t²

=> 5t²  - 4t  -  6 = 0

=> t ≈ 1.57

Horizontal  Distance = 4√3  * 1.57  = 10.8 m

Distance form Hand = √(10.8)² + 6²

= 12.35 m
