Answer:

No, college is not a waste of time. Any time spent learning is never wasted. Learning doesn't have to be in the college environment, but there are many valuable lessons that you learn while attending college. These lessons happen in and out of the classroom.

Answer:

It all depends on your alternatives. If the alternative is starting up a Microsoft/Facebook then you are probably better off dropping out. You have one in a billion chance to pull that off (Good luck!). Even then you have to realize that these folks went to the college and then dropped out. This way they could fully use their college network that provided their early employees.

First, the money. Over his/her lifetime an average person with a Bachelor's degree makes $1 million more than a person who didn't go to college. Now, this payoff really goes up if you choose a field you are good at and one that really has a demand in the market.

Second, the network. College friendships last forever. Even among those who dropped out to build their startup, you tend to see their networks playing a big role in their future team. Or for the more mundane, these connections might get you the leads you need to make your next sale or land your next job.

Third, the perspective. If you go to a good university in the US, you will get to meet a very diverse group of people. In your highschool, you might never encounter such a diversity. This will help you broaden the horizons and understand the world better. As we are getting globalized in everything, it pays to learn different cultures.
