How to answer: What are your strengths?

Posted: 22nd June 2017 by Laura Slingo in How to answer

When conducting your interview preparation, it’s best to brush up your knowledge of the most common interview questions.

However, while it’s all very well knowing what questions to expect in your job interview, you also need to know how to answer these questions effectively.

In this guide we address a recruiter’s favourite: what are your strengths? Read on to learn how to answer this all-important question effectively and seriously impress that recruiter.

Alternative ways of asking the question

What is your greatest strength?

What is your biggest strength?

What is your greatest achievement at work?

What strengths would you bring to this new role?

What is the purpose of the question?

As you may suspect, when you’re asked ‘what are your strengths?’ in an interview, your interviewer wants to know what you’re good at.

But there’s more to it than that.

Your future employer also wants to know how your strengths can be utilised in this new role and if you’re the best person for the job in comparison to your competition.

Also, this question will reveal a lot about your personality. Answer too arrogantly, and you may be shown the door, answer too humbly, and you may receive a similar fate; it’s all about providing an answer that’s just right, that will show you fit in with the company culture.

How to plan your response

When preparing for your interview, you need to break down your response into four parts: what your strengths are; how they relate to the job; how they set you apart from the competition; and your delivery.

Identify your strengths

When planning this answer, it’s best to have two or three great strengths in mind. After all, you can’t predict the conversation of the interview, and after discussing the role a bit more, you might find one strength is more appropriate to mention than another.

So, what strengths should you choose?

Typically, there are four types of strengths you could discuss. Firstly, there’s your experience, such as your knowledge of a particular industry or a piece of software.

Secondly, there are your transferable skills, such as communication and leadership – and don’t forget, you don’t necessarily have to have obtained these from within the workplace; life skills count, too.

Then there’s your education and qualifications, such as your degree.

And finally, there are your talents, such as your ability to write whitepapers or sell social media software.

How your strengths relate to the job

Once you’ve identified a few strengths, you then have to narrow your focus, so they relate to the role you’re applying for. Have a look through the necessary qualities listed in the job description and try to pair them with your strengths.
