The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE), 2009

Section 12 (1) (c) mandates reservation of a minimum of 25% of the seats at the entry level class (kindergarten or class 1) for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections in all private unaided schools excluding minority ones.

No interviews, capitation fee: Both the child and the parents should not be subjected to any form of interviews or screening at the time of admissions. There should be no capitation fees. Only age criteria to be followed.

Full-time formal schooling: All children should be sent to authorised mainstream schools. Non-formal centres and NGO centres not permitted.

No Denying Admissions: Students should be given year-round admission and cannot be turned down for lack of documents like birth certificates and residence proof.

Transfer certificates: Principals given powers to issue transfer certificates but the lack of it should not affect admission process.

Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012

The Law: Offers comprehensive provisions for the protection of children from s exual assault, s exual harassment and p ornography .

What Government Should Do: Designate a Sessions Court in each district as special courts for speedy trial, appoint special public prosecutor, special juvenile police units, child welfare committees and district child protection units.
