Answer:
fall we plant trees on public, public charter, and private school campuses. Students serve as the primary planters which allows them to take ownership of the project and responsibility for the trees. The students also participate in pre-planting activities that connects them to the benefits of trees.
Planting trees on a school campus will drastically improve the aesthetic appearance of the grounds making the campus more inviting to students, parents, faculty, and the surrounding community; provide shade to cool down hot recreation spaces and create outdoor classroom space that can be used as a teaching tool.
What to Know Before Applying:
Interested applicants should propose a fall planting site and locations for ten or more trees.
Successful applicants work with our Youth Programs Coordinator to help select tree species and planting locations and to develop a three year post-planting maintenance schedule. We provide support leading up to and on the day of the planting, and all the required tools and trees. Project Organizers are expected to attend a project planning orientation several months in advance.
Leading up to the event, students participate in a Casey Trees-led Tree Rally. Students learn the species of trees they will be planting, how to properly handle and plant the trees and the value of trees. During the event, students serve as the primary planters giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility for the project. Following the planting, students revisit their new trees for a tree care day, learning about the threats to the urban forest and what they can do to help. The school receiving the trees commits to watering them for a minimum of three years following installation.
School Tree Planting applications are accepted year-round. Those received by December 15 will be considered for the upcoming fall (September-December). Spring season plantings are limited to schools within OSSE's Environmental Literacy Program Cohort.
