Answer:
The adults sat in distant lounge chairs talking and holding slushy, fruity drinks with umbrellas in them.
We were in the pool pretending to be pirates. We'd make up elaborate scenarios played out across entire mornings.
It was my turn to fall off something and pretend I was drowning so I could be captured.
I stood on the very edge of the pool, fell into the water like a plank, and began thrashing about, sinking and coming back up for big, dramatic gulps of air.
That's when I felt it. A vise grip around my wrist. A yank that pulled me up with startling force. I was dragged, my body scratched against the rim of the pool, then tossed onto the hot concrete.
An adult has spotted me play drowning, thought I was real life drowning and leaped into the swimming pool fully clothed, ruining his suit, his tie, his watch, his shoes, his wallet, his fountain pen and his belt.
My friends and I explained we were just playing. He seemed furious, or frightened.
I threw my arms around this soaking wet adult-stranger's neck.
"I am sorry I scared you", I said. "Thank you for trying to save me."
That was the closest I've ever come to being rescued.
