• The pharynx is a very complex part of our body because in there both food pipe and wind pipe or larynx are situated adjacent to each other.

• But there is a small cartilaginous flap like structure called epiglottis which covers the larynx while swallowing the food and prevents the food to enter the wind pipe.

• It generally remains open during breathing but as soon as food enters the food pipe it closes the wind pipe to avoid the entry of food particles into the wind pipe.

• But sometimes, when we are performing both the actions simultaneously, that is breating while eating the food particles may enter the wind pipe and then it leads to rigorous coughing in an attempt to get that food particle out of the wind pipe.
