• The pharynx is a very complex part of our body because in there both food pipe and wind pipe or larynx are situated adjacent to each other.
• But there is a small cartilaginous flap like structure called epiglottis which covers the larynx while swallowing the food and prevents the food to enter the wind pipe.
• It generally remains open during breathing but as soon as food enters the food pipe it closes the wind pipe to avoid the entry of food particles into the wind pipe.
