One: Safety. To protect and preserve the lives and property of others.
Two: The orderly flow of traffic. Our highways are designed to maintain an orderly flow of traffic in the most efficient manner possible. It may not always be adequate, but it is of the best design.
Three: It is the law. If we pick and chose which laws we will obey, even if it starts only with traffic laws, it will expand into criminal laws and, eventually, to most laws. When we obey the law, traffic law included, our actions are more predictable. That means people on the highway are pretty sure they can drive safely and recognize the likely actions of other drivers.
