Given :- Yuto and Lian are at train stations 1,880 kilometers apart. Yuto boards a train heading east at an average speed of 220 kilometers per hour. At the same time, Lian boards a train heading west on a parallel track at an average speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

To Find :-

  • How far has Lian traveled when the two trains pass each other ?

Solution :-

given that,

→ Speed of train in which Yuto is heading east = 220km/h.

→ Speed of train in which Lian is heading west = 250km/h.

So,

→ usual speed of both trains = 220 + 250 = 470km/h . { speed adds in opposite direction. }

and,

→ Distance to be travelled before they pass each other = 1880 km.

then,

→ Time taken to pass each other = Distance / usual speed = 1880 / 470 = 4 hours.

therefore,

Distance traveled by Lian in 4 hours = Speed * Time = 250 * 4 = 1000 km (Ans.)

Hence, Lian traveled 1000km when the two trains pass each other.
