Given:-

Be+3 ion

To Find:-

Zeff

Solution:-

  • We know that the 'Zeff' can be defined as the net positive charge experienced by the valence shell electrons and it can be written as

             =>    Zeff = Z - σ    ,  where , Z is the atomic no. and σ  is the shielding constant and all these can be defined  as the Shielding effect or the screening effect

  • The electronic configuration of the Be+3 ion is is1

=>    Be+3 = 4-3= 1e = 1s1 , Here Z= 4 , and we have to calculate the σ

  • From Slater's rule the screening effect of ns & np( outermost orbit) =0.35

 For the Be+3 ion, it has 1e in its valence shell so the value of shielding        constant (σ  ) = 1* 0.35 = 0.35

And the Zeff= 4 - 0.35 => 3.65
