When the diode is heavily doped,depletion layer around the junction becomes very narrow.So,when reverse bias voltage is slightly increased(less than 4V),very strong electric field is set up.

This causes the covalent bond to break down due to which many electron-hole pairs are generated.Then,current rises sharply without damaging crystal structure at a zener breakdown voltage.

Therefore, zener diode is constructed by heavy doping.
