Zeolites are "aluminosilicate" obtained when " Al " - atoms replace few " Si" - atoms in 3 - D network of \mathsf{SiO_2}.

1 ). As a catalyst in petrochemical industries for cracking of hydrocarbons.

2 ). ZSM - 5 [ a type of Zeolite, ZSM = Zeolite Sieve Membrane { Numeral 5 indicates the size of pores} ] used to convert alcohols directly into gasoline ( petrol ).

3 ). Hydrated zeolites are used as "ion exchangers" in softening of ' hard water'.

What is Zeolites?

A shape-selective catalyst having Honeycomb structure which permit only selective molecules.

Formula: Mx/n [(AlO₂)x (SiO₂)y].zH₂O

Application of Zeolites:

  1. Acts as water softener & selective absorbents.
  2. Used as "ions-exchanger" in softening of hard water.
  3. For cracking of Hydrocarbons & Isomerization.
