Work done is calculated by the expression PdV.
P in the expression stands for the pressure against which the gas is expanding. In the case of a free expansion the external pressure is zero hence the work done is zero.
another way of looking at it is, work is the transfer of energy between the system and surroundings when there are imbalanced forces between them. In the case of free expansion the gas expands against no force at all hence no work is done.

Hello friends....
Free expansion is a process where no external pressure is applied.
Thwrefore,
P=0
And
Work done is given by
W= P × dV
Where,
dV= Change in volume
As P is zero in free expansion process,
Work done is also zero.
Hope this helps you....
