The Zika virus was first isolated in the Ziika forest of Uganda in 1947. Hence the name Zika Virus.

The virus is similar to that of yellow fever, dengue and West Nile virus and is a member of the Flaviviridae virus family. It is spread by the Aedes mosquitoes.

The human foetus contracts this disease from its mother. It results in microcephaly or brain malformations. Currently there is no treatment for Zika virus.
