It was to explain/understand the development of norms and the effect of roles, labels and social experiment can change someone's way of thinking/.

Example: the mock guards when told "this is their jail and they have control" it changed their way of thinking and they abused that power they had.

Example: the prisoners were completely aware at first this was an experiment but as time went on the guards started getting ruthless and because they had no concept of time and day it led them to thinking it was real, because of all the abuse the guards took to the prisoners started thinking it was real because of the effect it had on their minds.

In short it showed the abuse of power with the guards.
