The balanced chemical equation is, 2NaOH + ZnO ⇒ Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O

We have to balance the chemical equation,

ZnO + NaOH ⇒ Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O.

There are numerous methods to balance a chemical equation but Electron-ion method is one of the most appropriate ones.

Step 1 : ZnO ⇒ Na₂ZnO₂

or,  ZnO ⇒  2Na⁺ + ZnO₂²⁻ [ just remove  2Na⁺ from this half redox reaction]

or,  ZnO ⇒ ZnO₂²⁻

To balance oxygen, add H₂O to the left side and 2H⁺ to the right side.

or, ZnO + H₂O ⇒ ZnO₂²⁻ + 2H⁺ ....(1)

Here, charge is already balanced so we don't need to balance electron to both sides.

Step 2 : NaOH ⇒ H₂O + 2Na⁺ [ we get it (2Na⁺) from first half redox reaction]

or, 2NaOH + 2H⁺ ⇒ H₂O + 2Na⁺ + H₂O

or, 2NaOH + 2H⁺ ⇒ 2H₂O + 2Na⁺ ....(2)

Add both equations we get,

    2NaOH + ZnO + 2H⁺  ⇒ 2Na⁺ + ZnO₂²⁻ + H₂O

or, 2NaOH + ZnO ⇒ Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O

Therefore the balanced chemical equation is, 2NaOH + ZnO ⇒ Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O
