ਪੰਜਾਬ’ ਦੋ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਪੰਜ ਅਤੇ ਆਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਪੰਜ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਰਕ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਿਹਾ। ਬੁੱਝੋ ਭਲਾ ਤੁਰਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸੀ? ‘Punjab’ is combination of two words, ‘Punj’ and ‘Aab’ which means the land of five waters or five rivers. When the Turks came to India, they called the land of these five rivers Punjab in their own language.
