Depending on number of carbon atoms he prefix is given (eg: meth for 1 C atom,eth for 2 Carbon atoms,prop for 3 Carbon atoms,but for 4 Carbon atoms,pent for 5 Carbon atoms, hex, hept, oct, non and dec for 6,7,8,9 and 10 Carbon atoms respectively) then the suffix -ane is common for all(eg:methane,ethane etc)
