Aligarh, July 29: After 37 years of hectic and equally rewarding academic, clinical and administrative activities spanning over grading papers, delivering lectures, hiring young colleagues, attending faculty meetings, serving on committees, writing grants, and attending conferences in pursuit of knowledge; Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Hanif Beg today attained superannuation.

"These have been the most fulfilling years of my life and I am delightful to acknowledge that I was given the best working conditions and environment to deliver my duties and responsibilities," said Prof Begin the farewell ceremony at the Administrative Block.

He observed, "On my retirement, I can proudly say that AMU gave me opportunities to learn things that helped me professionally and personally. I met and made friends in AMU who supported me and we achieved success by working together."

"It gives me immense pleasure that AMU has been ranked as one of the finest educational institutions in the country under the dynamic leadership of our Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor," said Prof Beg, who also thanked the Vice Chancellor for having faith and confidence in him and for entrusting him with the responsibility of the Pro Vice Chancellor.

Prof Beg further thanked the university officials for extending assistance during his tenure as the Pro Vice Chancellor.

On the occasion, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, "I share a close association with Prof Beg as we have been colleagues since the early 80's and I have always seen Prof Beg contributing massively to the academic life of University."

"Prof Beg has given the best in his roles as the Chairman of the Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery; Dean, Faculty of Medicine and as the Pro Vice Chancellor, while maintaining ethics and standards of the medical profession and the University. He served as a member of many committees and played important role in selection committees," said the Vice Chancellor.

He added, "I am glad that Prof Beg retires today in good health and with an assurance of providing his services in his post-retirement life as a committed member of the University community."

"Prof Beg's research, teaching and administrative skills got better with time, and his students and colleagues will always value his wisdom and experience," said Prof Mansoor.

AMU Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS) pointed out that for the past one year, Prof Beg guided him in all the issues and important steps to be taken.

"Prof Beg fulfilled his responsibilities for the maintenance and supervision of the University along with his academic contributions," said the Registrar adding that he mentored young teachers in academic and scholarly work and officers in the management of administrative structure.

Prof S M Jawed Akhtar (Finance Officer), Mr Mujeebullah Zuberi (Controller of Examinations), Prof Afifullah Khan (Proctor), Prof Shamsul Haque Siddiqui (Dean, Students' Welfare), Deans of all faculties, MICs, Directors, Provosts, Chief Medical Officer, Joint Registrars, Joint Finance Officers, Joint Controllers, Deputy Registrars, Deputy Finance Officers and Deputy Controllers, were also present.

Prof Beg established and developed the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and started the Open-Heart-Surgery procedure in 1988 at the JNMC.

He completed MBBS from K G Medical College, Lucknow in 1976 and attended PGIMER Chandigarh for his MS (Surgery) and M Ch (CVTS) from 1980 to 1982. He joined JNMC as a lecturer in 1983 and became reader in 1988 and Professor in 1993.

He is a recipient of many awards and fellowships at National and International levels such as Lifetime Achievement Award from the Venus International Foundation and the prestigious Godrej S Karai Oration Award given by the Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons of India.

Prof Beg has a vast academic and administrative experience in AMU and outside. He has been the subject expert in numerous examinations of surgical disciplines and Public Service Commissions to select surgical specialists.

He has published over 161 research papers in journals of national and international repute and attended more than 122 conferences in India and abroad. Prof Beg has supervised thesis of 44 PG students. He serves as an editorial board member of eleven journals acclaimed nationally and internationally.

Prof Beg is a pioneer in performing endoscopy and endoscopic removal of various foreign bodies from aero-digestive tracts since 1983. He has invented many new techniques such as designing of 'Intercostal Tube drainage System', which saves precious lives daily.
