THE OLD MAN AT THE BRIDGE
Ernest Hemingway
The old man is more concerned about the safety of his animals than his own safety. He refused to walk further and resigns to his fate. He was taking care of animals ( a cat , two goats and a pigeon ) and not a care taker of his own.
He feels comfortable and satisfied by the fact that cats can look after themselves as they are self - reliant.
