b.i.  The dog was chasing the squirrel, however the dog, on a leash was held back by a leash. However, this didn't stop him from pursuing the squirrel, as we can see where it says 'a taut leash, the energetic dog heaves on through the canopied, crackling brown sea' this suggests that he ran from his owner, while still wearing his leash.

ii. The line 'Darkness with fall on us soon' could suggest, that it is getting dark outside, even though it is just late afternoon- which together with the mention of leaves leads us to the conclusion it is autumn- and that they should go back before it gets dark.
