now, I presume you know current, is the flow of positive charge in the conductor. Furthermore u might know the relation

V = i R        [ V =potential , i=current , R =resistance]

From this simple relation we can answer this question.

i = V/R

so.... in order to increase current we need to either reduce resistance, increase potential or do both simultaneously.

U might think the other means by which you can increase current is by increasing the number of electrons and drift velocity, electric field within the conductor.. n' all.... yes , it is true.... but you need to bear in mind .. all this is equivalent to changing resistance and potential in themselves as they are the factors affecting free electron density and drift velocity....
