Answer:

the formula of the compound formed between sodium and oxygen is

Na_{2}O

Explanation:

By crossing method

if,

Element-     Na           O

Valency-      +1            -2

then Sodium oxide = Na_{2}O

Given info : the valency of sodium is 1 and that of oxygen is 2.

To find : the formula of compound formed between sodium and oxygen is..

solution : before going to solve this question, let's understand what is valency and how does it help us to find the formula of any compound ?

valency of an element is the measure of its combining capacity with the atoms of other elements. it shows the no of electrons removed from /added to it. this way it forms ion and ions combine to form ionic compound.

here the valency of sodium is 1 and you know, sodium is metal. so it has tendency to lose 1 electron from its outermost shell and can form Na⁺ ion.

similarly the valency of oxygen is 2 and we know, oxygen is non-metal. so it has tendency to accept 2 electrom from its outermost shell and can form O²⁻ ion.

now the ratio of the oxidation state of Na⁺ and O²⁻ ions = 1 : 2

so the ratio of no of atoms in the chemical formula = 2 : 1

i.e., the chemical formula of sodium and oxygen is Na₂O.
