Question:

Use a net to find the surface area of the right triangular prism shown below:

Three rectangles next to each other with a width of 10 feet. The first and second rectangles length are unknown, and the last is 15 feet long. There are two right triangles above and below the last rectangle. One is labeled with a base of 9 feet and a height of 12 feet.

* See attached for the diagram

(a) 104 square feet

(b) 412 square feet

(c )468 square feet

(d) 504 square feet

Given:

It is a right triangular prism.

The dimensions are given in the net diagram.

Solution:

Refer to second attachment for the labelling of the different parts of the diagram in red.

Find Section A:

Section A is a rectangle with length 12 ft and width 10 ft

Area = 12 x 10

Area = 120 ft²

Find Section B:

Section B is a rectangle with length 9 ft and width 10 ft

Area = 9 x 10

Area = 90 ft²

Find Section C:

Section C is a rectangle with length 15 ft and width 10 ft

Area = 15 x 10

Area = 150 ft²

Find Section D:

Section D is a triangle with length 9 ft and height 12 ft

Area = 1/2 x 9 x 12

Area = 54 ft²

Find Section E:

Section E is a triangle with length 9 ft and height 12 ft

Area = 1/2 x 9 x 12

Area = 54 ft²

Find total area:

Total Area = 120 + 90 + 150 + 54 + 54

Total Area = 468 ft²

Answer: (c) 468 ft²
