your friend gave u one toffee in 1st day = 1 
                                 2nd day  one toffee= 1
                              3rd day one toffee      = 1 and it continues for 9 days 

so, at last, u will have 9 toffees altogether 
1 +1 +1+ +1+ 1+ 1+ 1+1 +1 = 9

suppose you have to invite ur friends on ur bday party and you have taken the names as : suresh , Ramesh , ravi, Gaurav , surbhi , aditi , raj , Rahul , simran .
So you have counted them 1 +1 +1 +1+ 1+ 1+ 1+ 1+ 1= 9
