5.The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in the garrison town of Meerut. 40 mi northeast of Delhi.

6.The important centres of the Revolt were Meerut Delhi Kanpur Lucknow and Jhansi.

7.First, the domination of the army by its European branch was carefully guaranteed. The proportion of Europeans to Indians in the army was raised and fixed at one to two in the Bengal army and two to five in the Madras and Bombay armies. Further, the European troops were kept in key geographical and military positions.

8.The powers of the Governor-General were increased and the post of the Viceroy was created in its stead. The first Viceroy of India was Lord Canning. The Doctrine of Lapse was abolished, rights of adoption were granted and the annexed regions were returned to the Indian rulers.
