1. A certain gas occupies a volume of 1500c.c at a certain pressure. When the pressure was altered to 5atm, the volume occupied by the gas is 3000c.c. Assuming the temperature to be constant, find the initial pressure of the gas.

According to Boyle’s Law:

P1V1 = P2V2

Based on the above data;

P1 = 720 mm Hg

V1 = 1500 cm3 = 1.5 L

V2 = 1000 cm3 = 1 L

P2 = ?

By substituting the values in the Boyle’s Law

P2= (P1 x V1) / V2

  = (720 mm Hg x 1.5 L) / 1 L

 = 1080 mm Hg

Thus the pressure at which the volume of the gas becomes 1000 cm3 is 1080 mm Hg.
