1. A girl riding a bicycle along a straight load with a speed of 5 m s-1 throws a stone of mass
0.5 kg which has a speed of 15 m s with respect to the ground along her direction of
motion. The mass of the girl and bicycle is 50 kg. Does the speed of the bicycle change
after the stone is thrown? What is the change in speed, if so?

Yes, due to the principle of conservation of momentum.

Initial momentum = 50.5×5 kg m s

–1

Final momentum = (50V+0.5×15) kg m s

change in speed = 5−4.9.=0.1ms

Answer:

Here, total mass of giral cycle and stone m1=50kg

initial speed , u1=5m/s, mass of stone m2=50kg velocity of stone, u2=15m/s

If upsilon is speed of girl and cycle (of mass m = 50kg) after throwing the stone, then applying principle of conservation of linear momentum, we getthrowing the stone, then applying principle of conservation of linear momentum, we get

m1u1=m2u2+mυ

mυ=m1u2−m2u2

50υ=50.5×5−0.5×15=252.5−7.5=245

υ=24550=4.9m/s

change in speed =5−4.9=0.1m/s
