It clearly forms a triangle if we join the starting and end points.Therefore by Pythagoras theorem,x² = 1200² + 500²
                                   x² = 1440000 + 250000
                                    x² = 1690000
                              ∴ x =  1300
Therefore, the distance(x) from the starting point = 1300 m
Hope it helps ! :)

if we draw the lines it becomes a right angle triangle
let the distance from starting point be ×
so by pythagoras theorem
×^2=500^2+1200^2
×^2=250000+144000
×^2=1690000
×=1300
therefore the distance from starting point is 1300
