The city of Savannah, was established in 1733 and was the first planned city of America. This coastal city is separated
from South Carolina by the Savannah River. Referred to as the “Hostess City” of the South, Savannah has a long history.
The Pre-Civil War Savannah was praised as the most picturesque and serene city in America. On an average, five million
people come to visit Savannah every year. Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by
founder James Oglethorpe. History buffs find enough to dig into with the Civil War attraction, heritage museum and old
homes. Savannah’s Telfair Museum is the oldest public art museum. A visit to Savannah would not be complete without
exploring the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, creator of Girl Scouts of the USA. Broughton Street is the place for
serious shoppers. Here, you’ll find the perfect Savannah-made souvenirs at local shops like Savannah Bee Company,
Nourish and The Salt Table. Goose Feathers Café, Clary’s Café and the Olde Pink House are some of the must visits for
southern food like maize waffles, grits and collards, and Leopard’s Ice cream.
Savannah’s famous riverfront has rows of cafes and restaurants where tourists sit with their ice creams to watch the river
cruisers and huge cargo ships glide by. A monument to Savannah’s African-American slave population stands on the river
front in the form of a black granite sculpture of a family with broken chains around their feet. Savannah surely leaves a
memorable stamp on the mind.
