1. A scooter travels 120km in 3 hours and a train travels 120km in 2 hours. Find the ratio of their speeds.
2. A recipe calls for 1 cup of milk for every 1 2 2 cups of flour to make a cake that would feed 6persons. How many cups of both flour and milk will be needed to make a similar cake for 8 people?
Answers
1) Speed of the scooter = (120/3) km/hr
= 40 km/hr
Speed of the train = (120/2) km/hr
= 60 km/hr
∴The ratio of their speeds = 60:40
= 3:2
∴ The ratio of their speed is 3:2
2) For 6 persons 122 cup of flour is needed
∴For 1 person (122/6) = (61/3) cup of flour is needed
∴ For 8 persons ( 61×8/3) = (488/3)= 162(2/3) cup of flour is needed
For 122 cups of flour 1 cup of milk is needed
∴For 1 cup of flour (1/122) cup of milk is needed
∴ For 162(2/3) cups of flour = 162(2/3)×(1/122)
= (488/3) × (1/122)
= (4/3)
= 1(1/3) cup of milk
∴ 162 whole of 2/3 cup of flour is needed and 1 whole of 1/3 cup of milk is needed.
